By removing these plugs, the soil is able to breathe better and the grass roots are able to grow deeper and stronger. This will lead to a healthier lawn, better water retention and more efficient use of fertilizers.

A buildup of thatch (decaying plant material) in your lawn can lead to increased pest and disease problems. It can also prevent oxygen from reaching the soil and roots, causing suffocation. Dethatching is the process of removing the excess thatch, allowing the roots of your lawn to receive the necessary oxygen, water, and nutrients they need to thrive. This will improve the overall health and appearance of your lawn.
The frequency of mowing your lawn is determined by the growth rate of the grass. This growth rate is influenced by a variety of factors, including weather conditions, the health of the lawn, cultural practices such as lawn treatments and irrigation practices.
To ensure that your lawn is always looking its best, we offer weekly lawn mowing services from April to November, as well as bi-weekly services from July to November. This allows us to keep up with the changing growth rate of the grass and ensure that your lawn is always neat and well-maintained.
Removing grass clippings after mowing is not typically necessary, unless there is an excessive build-up of clippings on the lawn. In fact, leaving the clippings on the lawn can be beneficial as they act as an organic fertilizer. The mowing blades chop the clippings into small pieces, which then fall to the roots of the lawn. This process, known as "grasscycling," can help to nourish the soil and promote healthy growth of the grass.
In the Chicago region, it is recommended to mow your lawn at a height of 3-3.5 inches during the spring and fall seasons. This is the optimal height for cool-season grasses, such as Kentucky bluegrass and fescue, which are commonly grown in the area.
During the hotter months, it is best to raise the cutting height to 3.5-4 inches, this will help the grass retain moisture and shade the roots, making it more tolerant to heat stress. This slight increase in cutting height will allow for more moisture to be retained at the roots of the lawn, promoting healthy growth and reducing the need for frequent watering.
Proper watering is essential for growing healthy turf. The best approach is to water deeply and infrequently, and then to let the soil dry out before you water again. An inch of water a week is what actively growing lawns need. Using a rain gauge to determine if more moisture is needed and avoiding overwatering can help save time and money. Automatic systems with rain sensors can also make it easier for homeowners. Watering deeply and allowing soil to dry out encourages turfgrass plants to develop more extensive root systems and make them less dependent on irrigation.

Core aeration is a lawn care process that involves removing small plugs of soil from the lawn to improve water absorption, reduce thatch buildup, and promote deeper root growth. This process improves the overall health of the lawn by allowing oxygen, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone more effectively. It's generally recommended to core aerate lawns at least once a year.
Lawn over-seeding is a process of adding new seed to an existing lawn in order to thicken it, improve its overall health and appearance, and promote a lush, green lawn. This can be done by broadcasting new seed over the lawn and then incorporating it into the soil using a rake or aerator.
Over-seeding can bring many benefits to a lawn, some of them are:
It's generally recommended to over-seed lawns once a year, especially in the fall season when the soil is still warm and the weather is mild.
In the spring, core aeration can help to alleviate soil compaction caused by winter freeze-thaw cycles and prepare the lawn for the growing season. The aeration will also help to promote deeper root growth, which will improve the overall health and appearance of the lawn.
In the fall, core aeration can help to alleviate soil compaction caused by summer traffic and prepare the lawn for winter. It also allows new seed to make better contact with the soil and improve seed germination.
Both fall and spring are generally considered the best times for core aeration, depending on the climate and the specific condition of the lawn. Aerating in the fall helps to alleviate soil compaction and promote seed germination, while aerating in the spring helps to alleviate soil compaction and promote deeper root growth.

Thatch is the layer or organic matter between the soil, and grass. It is mostly consisted of decomposing grass, leaves, and grass roots. A thin layer of thatch can actually be beneficial to your lawn by helping your lawn to retain moisture and maintain a steady soil temperature. This thatch is typically around 1/4". Once thatch starts to reach the 1/2" mark, that is when the problems start. This much thatch can retain too much moisture, which can lead to lawn diseases, and cause the roots of the grass to grow into the thatch, and not the soil below.
While excessive thatch is caused from other problems, leaving excessive amounts of thatch can leave your lawn susceptible to many other problems, so getting rid of it quickly recommended.
There are many benefits to dethatching your lawn when the thatch becomes too thick. For starters, your lawn will be able to absorb water better through the soil. This allows more nutrients, like from fertilizers, and air to penetrate into the soil, which the roots then take advantage of to better help your lawn fully establish into the soil. Dethatching your lawn can also yield better results when over seeding your lawn.
